It was great to see global south coming together and defining the agenda for climate action at this #africaclimatesummit23. The most striking part was a very articulate and nuanced discourse on what Global South needs from the world for climate action. #work #climatechange
#AfricaClimateSummit23 Yesterday, I heard young African children talk about how they need to be part of the discussion on climate finance. So good to see the future generation coming forward and demanding a better future. #ClimateAction #AfricaClimateSummit #Nairobi
#Africa loses up to 4 million hectares of forest each year, costing the continent a loss of 3% of its GDP annually. Côte d’Ivoire, alone, lost 80% of its forests between 1900 and 2021, as it aimed to become the world’s largest cocoa producer. Ghana lost at least 50% over the same period

In Africa, groundwater is very important. It supports almost 100% of household and agricultural activities in rural areas. And, because it’s underground it’s protected from evaporation, a crucial resource in a warming climate.

In some countries groundwater is owned by the landowner, in others by the government. Generally, it’s being poorly managed across the continent.

Hydropower provides clean electricity to millions in Africa. It accounts for nearly one quarter of total electricity generation in sub-Saharan Africa.

Some countries, however, have a much heavier reliance on it than others. For instance, hydropower accounts for at least 80% of electricity generation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia.
