Followers of Maraimalai #Adigal couldn’t keep up with #LinguisticCleansing forever. Part of "train" ரயில் வண்டி sounds like the English word “rail”. Calculators (கால்குலேட்டர்a) and rockets (ராக்கெட்) don't seem to have native #Tamil words. Has English #enslaved Tamil?

Not making fun of Tamil language. Just pointing out how misguided #LinguisticCleansing effort was to begin with. #Hindi has adopted words like Bus, Platform, etc. from #English without much fuss.

Overt hatred against #Hindi has been rooted in #TamilNadu since before #India's independence. This predates any #HindiImposition.

Thanith Tamil Iyakkam (Independent #Tamil Movement), started by Maraimalai #Adigal in 1916 showed intolerance not just to Hindi but to all non-Tamil languages including #Sanskrit. They intensively weeded out words in Tamil from other languages, cauterizing the naturally evolving language itself in the process

#Language #evolution is natural, not "hegemonic" unless there's #LinguisticCleansing, as undertaken by #Tamil purists like #Maraimalai #Adigal in 1916 to "Make Tamil Pure Again"

There's no doubt that some of this ugly #reactionary practice is resurgent among #Hindutva proponents who want to "Make Hindi Pure Again"

That calls for a push against reactionary #ideologies like Thanith Tamil Iyakkam (Independent Tamil Movement), not Hindi or Tamil languages themselves.

Some engaged in #militant rhetoric such as language #imperialism & #enslavement, driving their followers to death by #selfImmolation, #poisoning, and #rioting while they themselves stayed away like #Trump did on #Jan6.
