So #Loops features on Hacker News, having 245 comments rn. Many fedizens revile HN, for reasons I well understand.

It's still interesting to look into this thread and distill some product feedback for Loops' improvement.

HN is often blamed for having only techbro's with growth-hack mentality, with no moral compass or ethics.

Yet in the comments most concerns *are* about the #ethics of creating an #Activityub federated #FOSS TikTok, even without the addictive algorithm. Worried that short-form vids as snacks for the brain are already detrimental to people's mental health.

Some good feedback to ponder on..

Though I also observe a general misunderstanding how loops differs from TikTok, and the website doesn't explain that well enough. I'd make general public ("users") the prime audience served on the frontpage, who are hardly addressed atm. Then have a separate Creators header menu section. Then a Values section that also gives background to tech benefits.

@TotalSonic They are extending the ActivityPub protocol with a lot of non-standard features... It would be good to get some of the #activityub devs working with them to implement these as part of the standard.

@Confidant6198 apparently I can repost directly from #Lemmy to #Mastodon - which completely slipped my mind.

There's a difference between parsing oembed(?) and utilizing #activityub - fittingly enough.

Perhaps the problem is that the Lemmy interface should let you share from a user on a different server, rather than #Maatodon should render oembeds differently.

But how about both?

They don't have to. They will be the largest and by far the best funded instance on day 1. They can do whatever they want. Scrape the #fediverse for user data to sell? Easy. Create a nonprofit council that they control to manage the #activityub protocol? Easy. Incorporate proprietary code into the #meta instance? Who's going to stop them? Require other instances to comply or be defederated? Do you really have to ask?
