The women’s national team has played two matches in the Asian Cup. The local league, however, was suspended and the foreign players left the country. At the beginning of the week, a fake news story circulated claiming that Taremi had returned to enroll. Meanwhile, raids are destroying infrastructure. In Tehran, the indoor arena of the Azadi sports complex was hit.

I took the first photo while visiting my parents in #Tehran, in 1978.

Davoud Ghahrdar of the AP took the second photo, this week.

I went to the top of #Azadi, or Freedom Tower, and stood at the center window.

I made a point of standing at the center window on both sides, so I could always say “I was *there.*”

Call me naive, but I never imagined a scene like the second photo.

The tower is an exquisite work of Islamic architecture; should the United States or Israel damage it, I believe it would constitute a war crime.
