Yesterday students baked and brought in a #federalism cake to illustrate the different layers of government. An #APGov tradition, and a great way to go into #WinterBreak. #education #teaching #HighSchool #SocialStudies #Civics

One of my favorite #APGov and #APMacro topics around #Thanksgiving is #FDR and his move of the holiday one week earlier. His desire to improve #Macroeconomic conditions set off a firestorm and a great example of #Federalism in action. The “This Day in Esoteric Political History” episode on the controversy is fantastic! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/this-day-in-esoteric-political-history/id1502728938?i=1000519244171

Hello to anyone who might be reading! #Introduction

My name is Matthew Bunch, and I am a 12th Grade AP U.S. Government and Politics and AP Macroeconomics teacher at MAST Academy on Virginia Key in beautiful Miami, Florida.

My background was in journalism, and I both advise the student newspaper at MAST and work part-time at the Miami Herald as an online producer. 1/2

And another #APGov test in the books. I can kind of see where the College Board was going based on the number of tweeting students who forget that loose lips sink ships.

Intriguing choices this year!

28 of 31 kids showed up for the #APGov exam (some required some wrangling). Of course, I can't proctor the exam, but I did take a look at them before they started administration. My last words as I walked out:

Just did a review session with my #APGov students.

I don't know if they're all ready (certainly saw a lot of heads down on desks)...but at this point, I don't care.

The students who want to do well will almost certainly do well. The ones who don't give two shits will have wasted an entire school year.

If the #pandemic has taught me anything about #teaching, it's that I cannot save everyone - not everyone wants to be saved, and I need to save my energy for the ones who want to learn.

"But Paul, every child can learn!"
Absolutely, no doubt. But that doesn't mean they want to learn, or learn from you, or learn what you're teaching. And sometimes...you have to learn stuff that you don't care about. That's how life is.

But more and more, I see students simply not do any work if the subject matter does not interest them. Where's that get them?
