Impressed by the novel A House of Doors.

Somerset W. Maugham is a character in it called Willie. And it features a real-world collection of short stories by Maugham called The Casuarina Tree. They're about the white colonialists who served the British Empire in Malaysia.

The stories in it are each on Youtube.
The first two have featured very tense interpersonal relationships and murder.
