Box № 12 of #50boxes, a simple rabbeted (BE: rebated) gift box. Body from 8 mm ash, lid and bottom from 0.6 mm curly ash veneer glued to a 4 mm beech plywood core. Finished with BLO and paste wax, and the usual brass hardware.

The rabbeted construction of the body makes it easy to make a rabbet for the lid and bottom with a plough plane, as no stopped rabbets are necessary like with dovetails.

Time estimate from rough-sawn lumber to finish: about 20 hours.

These thin boards ⬆️ became the dividers of Box № 11, a little tray for all the various turning chisels that were flying around the shop. Another easy, functional box made from softwood scraps. The lid simply rests on the frame; held in place by two thin slats.

Yes, the bottom and top panels are glued cross-grain. Because it's easy, and I want to know if they really fail over time 😛

Finished with one coat of shellac, then paste wax. Sooo smoooth…

Update on Box 1 of #50boxes after five years: the lid has warped upwards a bit due to the different moisture level and the orientation of the grain, so the latch on the front now sits very tight. Maybe I should've used a frame-and-panel construction instead, or at least flipped the board upside down to make it warp in the other direction so it is tight on the front edge. Well, that's how you learn!

(Yes, you saw that right, I'm skipping Box № 9 of #50boxes – it's already finished, but it will be a holiday gift, which hasn't been given away yet, so I don't wanna spoil any surprises!)

The finished bin came together just in time for the old, broken one to get full. I put four swivel wheels on the underside today, filled up all the small joints and cracks on the inside of the panels with wood filler, and also equalized the transistion from the panels to the rails so the bag doesn't catch and rip when taken out.

I'm gonna count this as Box № 10 of #50boxes. What I learned: dowel joinery, and frame-and-panel construction! Will definitely use this again!

Did I start this box over one year ago? Yes [1]. But I needed something to store all my stickers to take it to #gpn22, so I took this as an opportunity to finally finish it. (Turns out: it doesn't even fit half my sticker collection… 😅)

Box № 8 of #50boxes: Lid from 0.6 mm veneer (beech, mahogany, and padauk), inside from bookmatched maple, glued to 3 mm beech plywood (also on bottom). Body from acacia scraps from the trash, mitre splines from walnut.

@daniel_bohrer got to start trying making boxes by hand, shop organisation seems to be in dire need for them, and I can only get so far with recycled shoe boxes and tin cans.

What's that #50boxes thing? A sort of challenge?

Ooohhhh this looks exactly like the book I need as inspiration for #50boxes :3

(from Doug Stowe: Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Box Making, ISBN-13: 978-1561585939)

This is now Box № 7 of #50boxes. Back to the basics; it's basically the same as № 1 (see https://chaos.social/@daniel_bohrer/103194819913523986), made in around 10 hours with mostly hand tools from softwood scraps floating around the shop, and beech plywood glued on as bottom and top.
With three layers of foam inserts cut on the fablab laser, it now holds the new circle cutter.
After yesterday's accident, I was able to scrape off the instructions from the lid with a putty knife, and re-glue them right side up 🙃

Attached: 3 images I had too many hinges and locks flying all over the workspace… so the only logical step was to use them and build a box for them. Made from pine and cheap plywood scraps with mostly hand tools (except for a drill and a miter saw for the angles, and the hardware of course), then finished with my home-made paste wax. Unfortunately, the lock was quite loose, so I had to fix it with two small magnets ^^ #woodworking #50boxes

Box № 6 of #50boxes, a gift for a dear friend of mine  using one of their own designs. Same construction as with № 5, with mountain ash for the body, and veneers of maple (background, inside panel), eucalyptus burl (probably?, body), clear and stained linden (Mastodon logo and tusks), red pine (probably, mouth) and redwood burl (hair and inside panel). Redwood is called "Mammoth tree" in German, of course I had to use it for this design!
