After gluing the veneer tiles together (rubbing glue into the seams from the back side), I removed the tape on the front, sanded the front, and applied shellac. Then I put a thin layer of glue on the back of the veneer, let it dry completely in a press between sheets of baking paper (so it stays flat and doesnt stick), and then ironed on a nice backing paper for stabilisation.
