J'affute mes rabots, ciseaux à bois, couteaux,... tous !

Box № 12 of #50boxes, a simple rabbeted (BE: rebated) gift box. Body from 8 mm ash, lid and bottom from 0.6 mm curly ash veneer glued to a 4 mm beech plywood core. Finished with BLO and paste wax, and the usual brass hardware.

The rabbeted construction of the body makes it easy to make a rabbet for the lid and bottom with a plough plane, as no stopped rabbets are necessary like with dovetails.

Time estimate from rough-sawn lumber to finish: about 20 hours.

Then: nibbling away very short pieces of endgrain at a time from the end of the stopped rabbet so as not to blow out that end… 🥵

Well, the dovetails looked exactly as gappy as the phrase "I haven't cut any dovetails in two years" suggests. The board was also slightly bowed, but after enough glue, enough clamps, a once-over with the peening hammer on the end grain, and flush trimming, they looked okay.

Important final step: adding chamfers.

Now I have a small tray to rest my cup on the armrest of the Ikea couch. And at least achieved one thing after a stressful day full of tech hurdles.

Dove-Tails, woo-hoo! Every-body's busy cutting… Dove-Tails, woo-hoo! 🎶

I haven't cut dovetails in … about two years, I think? Let's see how this goes…

After multiple times of wanting to use the plough plane and getting into the problem illustrated in the first picture, I finally invested two evenings and made an adjustable jig to hold slim stock for plough planing. Robert Weaving calls this a "sticking board" in his book "The Solution at Hand"; an additional nail through the planing stop to hold the stock in place is optional.

Result of yesterday's work: three hand planes with five additional holes for the shooting grip. (On the Veritas Low-Angle Smoother I was able to re-use the existing hole for the grub screw for lateral blade adjustment.)

It's much more comfortable than without the grip on all three planes (but quartersawn oak is still a pain to shoot 🙈)

Why is it that there are good sales on woodworking tools when i have exhausted my tool budget?

That's what you get for watching too many of Dave Bull's woodblock carving streams: you get inspired to do some carving of your own.
So yesterday evening was spent carving some letters. At first I tried the big versions, and it took a lot of effort, especially in beech. But I shouldn't have worried, because the small version in cherry was very easy to carve, and with the ultra-sharp carving knife, I almost didn't need to apply any force at all ☺️
