El 14 de julio de 1992 se libera la versión 0.1 del OS 386BSD desarrollado por Lynne y William Jolitz con la idea de portar BSD Net/2 a procesadores Intel 386.
Fue uno de los primeros sistemas operativos libres. Destacó por innovaciones como seguridad basada en roles, búferes en anillo, configuración auto-ordenada y un diseño modular del núcleo.
Hoy, esta descontinuado, pero su código base se usa en proyectos como NetBSD, OpenBSD y FreeBSD.
