Today is the 70th anniversary of the deadly 1953 floods in the Netherlands, which led to massive civil engineering works to keep the sea at bay in future. My mother remembers it; she was nine.

On the 31 January 1953 floods affected my home town of Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire U.K. Many lives were lost on the East Coast and there was massive devastation to property. Our Canadian friends donated a Maple leaf paddling pool to the town which is still in use today. Many thanks to my Canadian Mastodon friends. #1953floods #floods #Canada
