This has been occupying me, when I’m not sorting out stupid pooter things.
It’s a 1/72nd scale Avro Manchester, the precursor design to the more famous Lancaster bomber. It’s a conversion kit for a standard Lancaster kit, and it’s been lurking around the bench since 2023. I’m now in the final paint and detail stage. It should be finished early in the new year.
The latest model aircraft completed for the 1940 obsession. This year, I’m concentrating on RAF Bomber Command. An important British plane of World War Two was the Vickers Wellington. Over 11,000 were built up to 1945.
Built from the recent Airfix kit, which features a fully-detailed interior, my model represents a Wellington of No 311 (Czechoslovak) Squadron, flying from a base in Suffolk.
This past week, my 1940 hobby saw an Airfix Wellington masked for painting, an Airfix Stirling take a few faltering steps towards completion, and an AZ Model Tutor gets a few more finishing touches before I attempt to instal the rigging wires.
My 1940 Short Stirling project is coming together nicely. Upgrading a kit first made in the 1960s has been fun. I’m going to have to virtually scratch build nose and tail turrets, as I have done for the cockpit. Very pleased with how this build is going.

Over the past few weekends, I’ve been slowly putting together a 1/72nd scale aircraft kit. It’s a Handley Page Hampden, a medium bomber of the Royal Air Force in the early years of the Second World War. I’ve now got three model planes about ready for painting to begin, which means I must commit to setting up the air brush compressor and extractor system soon.
