There was a time when you paid by the minute to get online, and you downloaded info at the then-blazing speed of 1200 bits per second. (Roughly 260,000 times slower than what I have today, if I did the math right.) We really had to watch our budget.

@lopatto the good news is you often can just go into "reading mode" and all the layers of crap hiding the content will magically disappear. However, even this is getting slowly "fixed" which is not only making content unable to be found, but also making people with disabilities unable to use the sites at all.

The thing that made the world wide web grow and do incredible things was the free and open sharing of thoughts and ideas. Now all the content is walled off so that it can be productized and sold, while the people that used to produce it realize their being exploited and stop. That's why content is not only not being shared but the quality of it has plummeted into repost, rehashed, and whatever can get a quick emotional reaction.

Sometimes I long for #gopher and it's all text, knowledge, and free sharing of information purposes. Yes, I'm dating myself with that statement. #1200baud

Oh oh oh! Here's a great read I haven't done in a few years!

This guy was one of the #HamRadio BBS operators in the bay area during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and he describes the project of trying to keep the packet network flowing as everyone and their uncle tried to send welfare checks into the bay area in a time before the Internet.

I really love how it gives a sense of scale for how important the amateur packet network was there for a time. #PacketRadio #DigitalRadio #BBS #1200baud #history

@jaymerryfield @TimQuerengesser At the very least it’s a nostalgia generator for those of us who remember the dial-up days.
