冬の紋別市 Monbetsu-city in winter 紋別市は、縄文時代より人々の生活の営みがあり、今から約340年前には既に当時の松前藩が宗谷から斜里(知床)までのオホーツク海沿岸の寄港地として利用していた。1855年には蝦夷地(北海道)が江戸幕府の直轄管理下に入り、秋田藩がオホーツク沿岸の警備担当となり、モンベツ出張陣屋が設置された。1880年(明治13年)には戸籍事務を行う役場、 戸長役場(紋別村外9カ村戸長役場)を設置し、以後、沿岸漁業の活性化、道路の開削、そして1921年(大正12年)国鉄名寄線「紋別駅」開業により人口は急増し、地域の行政及び産業経済の要所として発展を続けてきた。1954年(昭和29年)に近隣の1町2村の合併により人口3万6,000人の「紋別市」が誕生した。1962年(昭和37年)の4万2,524人が人口のピークとなり、以降次第に減り続けているが1975年(昭和50年)には紋別港が重要港湾に指定され国際貿易港としての整備が進められ商港として定着している。また我が国唯一の氷海域であるオホーツク海の特性を生かし、冬季は流氷観光、夏季は花観光や釣りクルーズ体験など観光都市としても力を注いでいる。 People were already living in the area of Monbetsu City in Hokkaido as early as the 10th century BC. 秋の八郎沼公園/北斗市 Hachironuma Park in autumn / Hokuto City 八郎沼公園は人工の沼周辺に整備された公園で、沼の拡張工事を行った中村長八郎と云う人物に由来し公園の名が付けられた。春には、コブシやツツジ、桜、夏にはスイレンや各種花々、秋には紅葉など季節ごとに様々な風景を観ることができる。パークゴルフ場や体験農場なども隣接しており憩いの場として多くの人が訪れている。 Hachironuma Park is a park developed around an artificial swamp, and was named after Nakamura Chohachiro, who carried out the expansion work on the swamp.
