An Iranian missile struck a building in the city of Dimona, in the Negev desert, causing at least 39 injuries, one of them serious. The Israeli military confirmed the impact after several videos on social media showed a fireball hitting the site. Dimona is internationally known because it hosts the core of Israel’s nuclear program: the “Negev Nuclear Research Center” (NRCN), about 13 kilometers southeast of the city. The facility includes a heavy water reactor and a plutonium separation plant. Although Israel has never officially confirmed or denied the possession of nuclear weapons (following the so-called “nuclear opacity” policy), intelligence experts and international observers believe that Dimona is the site where the country’s nuclear warheads are produced. In a statement distributed by the Tasnim agency, Tehran said it had struck “in response to attacks by the United States and Israel” against the Natanz nuclear site and the Bushehr power plant. Iranian authorities claim that “the enemy received yet another unforgettable lesson” and that the attack on Dimona represents “a clear signal that no area is safe from Iranian missiles.”
