Many of the USs major research vessels are in fact owned by the Navy (though they are operated by academic institutions) and may be pressed into military service in case of war. They used to be included in Jane's All The World's Warships, etc. Not sure if this is still true. Coast Guard icebreakers are used for research a fair bit because there are no civilian research icebreakers.

No I mean the thing is the GOP was a fascist party before Trump; and if you don't math that in, you probably have a hard time understanding why Trump (and crucially, his cult of personality) was able to "transform" the American right into a fascist movement. The truth is, he didn't have to. This was a movement in search of a Hitler, not a Hitler in search of a movement. He is, after all, an actor; albeit one I find unconvincing.
