IP TV - when progress is regress
Warning: This is my experience where I live. Your mileage might vary.
Back in the day, we had TVs with antennas. It could have been better, but it worked. Sometimes, someone had to grab the antenna and use their body as an auxiliary antenna so the whole family could enjoy the TV show. It was not perfect, but it worked.
Then, we had cable. And it just worked. It had a good-quality picture, excellent uptime, responsive channel switching, and minimal boot time. And people were mostly happy with this service. The best option was to use a PCMCIA smart card, put that into the TV, and voila, you don't need any additional device to use your TV—one single remote for everything.
And now we are forced to use IP TV. Sometimes, the Android box takes 3-4 minutes to boot. Sometimes, it tries to download an 852 MByte patch, but it fails to do so repeatedly. Even though it has Wi-Fi capability, it does not work via Wi-Fi. In your home, where the coax cable used to run, now you have to use Ethernet cables. Or subscribe to their "Smart Wi-Fi option" for increased complexity and subscription costs.
Are you an advanced user who wants to use your firewall? Well, bad luck. After I spent countless hours reading forums and trying to use the IP TV behind the firewall (configuring VLANS, IGMP proxy, god knows what), it never worked correctly.
But I have the option to use the IP TV directly from the ISP modem, don't I? Well, in my home, only one Ethernet cable goes from the place where the ISP modem and my firewall are to the room where my TV and a bunch of other IP gadgets are. "Just use VLANs to separate," you say. After spending countless hours, it just did not work. I may not be excellent at networking, but I consulted network people, and what I configured should have worked.
Do you want a second TV? Good. This means one more subscription for which we will give you the same piece of ***** Android box. Oh, you don't have Ethernet in that room? Don't worry; we can give you even more "Smart Wi-Fi."
Did your Android box freeze again? Just reboot it via the power plug—every day.
Do you want to watch our content on your smart TV without this stupid Android box? We are sorry, but we don't have the app for that; it only works on Android or iOS. tvOS? Ah, no, sorry, use our "quality" Android box.
One advantage of having an Android TV box could be to have a proper TV remote. But the ISP will give you the worst TV remote you ever witnessed. Just for good measure.
IP TV is anything but progress.
