There was a big spike in posts on the Fediverse today. At one time, there were 350,000 toots sent in an hour.

This is what Twitter is now defining as "doxxing people's location." A factual piece of reporting about the company blocking a competitor. Can't do anything until I delete it.

Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.

Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

How many discoveries & innovations of #women do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?

Sexism pushed Rosalind Franklin toward the scientific sidelines during her short life, but her work still shines on her 100th birthday

Franklin was born a century ago, and her X-ray crystallography work crucially contributed to determining the structure of DNA.

Welcome new neighbors. My best tips:
1. In preferences, switch to advanced web interface.
2. Switch to light mode. You will thank me.
3. Complete your profile & write & pin a post introducing yourself *before* you start following other folks.
4. In the Notifications column settings, under quick filter bar, turn on "display all categories" (separates replies from boosts from new followers).
5. Try movetodon.org to find folks from the Dodo site.

On Joining Mastodon - Whither news? - Medium

An academic friend asked for help joining Mastodon. I wrote a detailed email in response that I thought it might be useful to others. I’m also going to teach a master class in Mastodon at my school…

Whither news?

With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:

1. Welcome!

2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.

3. Lots of people are willing to help.

4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.

5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.

Be patient.

Hate to see journalists on their knees in supplication to Musk, begging him to not be so mean to them. The implication is that if he reverses course -- restoring accounts of reporters he doesn't like, and links to the competition -- all will be well.

This totally ignores reality. He has demonstrated again and again that lies and deceit are tools of his trade.

Journalists, please get out now, or soon. Don't help him. https://www.press.org/newsroom/national-press-club-statement-journalists-being-removed-twitter

National Press Club Statement on Journalists Being Removed from Twitter

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 – Following is a statement from Jen Judson, president of the National Press Club, on reports that journalists have been removed from Twitter because of their reporting. “We are very disappointed at the many reports in recent days that Twitter accounts for prominent journalists at major brands have been deleted without warning or explanation. We call on Twitter to do the right thing and restore these accounts immediately. As for reports that the new owner, Mr. Musk, is directing this activity as retribution for unfavorable reporting, that simply must stop, or it will lead to all journalists leaving Twitter.” Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. The Club has 3,000 members representing nearly every major news organization and is a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide.
