@maria @marcelias it could be if changes are made...but my point is that it isn't now, and we need a replacement asap

@marcelias

The fact remains:

There's *still* no replacement for #twitter in terms of rapid #news dissimination, citizen #journalism, social movements, etc.

#Mastodon isn't it atm. For many reasons, Mastodon's growth is limited. There's an expectation/hope that Mastodon will change, bc there's misguided belief that it wants to be the new twitter.

In any case, what mattters is that nothing is filling the void.

And that's a big f'n problem.

TLDR: Mastodon is very white, male, status quo, global north, and designed in a way to limit its potential for use in social movements.

Mastodon feels very different from Twitter, deliberately. It is truly like Live Journal. It is about people who are happy with their social circle and who think of virality and discoverability as a problem. They just want to communicate with the people they know, and limit other things. Ironically, it is more like a private gathering than a public space.

Ok, I see. Still, I trust you have more to add to this discussion than me πŸ™‚

@taylorlorenz

100% serious about this πŸ‘† and would like ex-twitter employees like
@eirliani to weigh in.

@taylorlorenz

The views in this thread would make a great article 😜. And panel discussion.

Clearly, Musk is altering #twitter to serve the bad -isms and favor paid speech. What twitter supported --- rapid #news dissimination, citizen #journalism, and free exchange, all serving little "l" liberal values -- has no refuge atm.

"Can #Mastodon fill the void? Should it?"

A critical discussion, indeed.

Anyway, it doesn't now, and there are some real barriers for sure.

Reblogging is organic user behavior and Twitter built the quote tweet feature because so many people were doing it manually already. It’s a huge burden on the user not to have this simple and important feature on a social platform imo (again just my personal opinion!)
@cafechatnoir oh I'm well into the "all the way upstairs" stage πŸ˜‚

Nope.
