The XKCD about how much of the UK was dug up for coal mining (3 inches) was cool.
But I wondered: What would it look like as a cube? My maths (probably wrong) says it’d be about 18km^3.
Plonked onto London, that cube would run from Enfield down to South Croydon, from Creekmouth across to Southall, and the height would be… twice that of Mt Everest!

More simply, in terms of Everest, it’s probably about 33 Everests. The largest mountain on earth, dug up and burned 33 times over. And that’s just one country’s coal production. 😥

Bought a ASUS ROG display for Tatjana because it has USB-C for docking mode.

Doesn't work with any USB-Cables we had. So bought a new USB-C to USB-C with thunderbolt.

Works except not charging.

Readers... the cable was in backwards. It's directional.

There is nothing less universal than USB

Just created a group of Android Perf volunteers at work that are making themselves available for teaching, mobbing, etc.. and really happy that we've found a great name for it:

Every Olympic commentator right now is some variant of this.

If you are new to Live Pigeon Shooting, competitors have to kill as many live pigeons as possible. Winners are determined by whoever shoots the most birds out of the sky. A shooter is eliminated once they miss two birds.

Crowdstrike fucked up. But the horrible failure mode is Windows’ fault.

The regular Chrome browser has the same challenges as Windows: run everyone’s code, run everyone’s extensions, keep everything up-to-date.

But when something breaks, Chrome doesn’t fall over. One crashed process can’t take out the system. Google can remotely block broken or malicious extensions.

Why doesn’t Windows do this?

AI plays NetHack, runs into long-forgotten lunar code

I dimly remembered that NetHack had this feature, although I never played it much; where modern immersive games track the sun and weather (PokemonGo, for one) back in the days of VT100 we had more blunt easter eggs for addicted players…

So here's a story of, by far, the weirdest bug I've encountered in my CS career.

Along with @maciejwolczyk we've been training a neural network that learns how to play NetHack, an old roguelike game, that looks like in the screenshot. Recenlty, something unexpected happened. pic.twitter.com/AFTgRm1gtv
