i think this is just so interesting

"Brazil" is named after an indo-pacific tree, brazilwood. Long before 1500, Portuguese traders and elites valued this tree because it could be processed into rare red dye.

Mistaking this "newfound" tree in the "new" world, Portuguese traders changed the coast's colonized name from "Land of the Holy Cross" to "Land of Brazil (trees)". God turned to Capital, misery, and death.

The coastal "brazilwood" would become the continent's first overextracted material for colonizer's gain. it is now considered an endangered species.

so Mejia's art/anthropology project is implicitly in dialogue with the history of colonization yet seeks instead bridges of knowledge and culture; she seeks not the exploitation of land and labor but the illumination of Indigenous life and practice; all oriented around dye.

i couldn't even get two paragraphs into the History of Brazil wikipedia page before falling face-first into an hour-long web exploration

I'm Lakota, disabled, and currently can't safely leave my house. I'm Indigenous without state ID, and in the current climate, that means risking detention or worse every time I step outside.

Despite that, I keep organizing.

Recent projects: distributed thousands of emergency whistles to small communities across rural northern Minnesota. Currently working on irrigation and climate control systems for home gardens in these same communities.

But! I need help to keep going.

Being disabled means inconsistent ability to work. Being Indigenous and undocumented in Minnesota right now means I'm essentially housebound. But the community work continues, and I need to survive while doing it.

Your support keeps me housed, fed, and able to continue this work.

am much more likely to lurk than engage, and i want to tend more to a thoughtful and caring community here in 2026

lots of us delve into important studies and are meaningfully exploring them! (when it seems likely some deep or surfaced values align) we should humbly engage each others' writing!

i wanna be more open to this, welcoming and seeking-out others' inclusion. and jfc i need pro-social writing not confined to my phd work

the bicycle is the only perfect machine to result from the industrial revolution

gotcha! then we're not really in disagreement?

i post my opinion, something that seems really obvious. you combat it with a different sort of understanding; fair! neither of us are imposing but sharing perspectives -- this is a "thinking together" (thought, isolated, is nothing)

my anarchism requires me to think about stuff collaboratively and come to always-questionable conclusions that have actual utility for all of us. hence, posting on a public forum and not to some private journal.

fundamentally,

your politics are lifeless if only ever applicable in certain situations; e.g., at the polls, in your workers' councils, within your Party, etc.

your politics are lively if applicable at the smallest, most intimate scale; e.g., in your household, in your kitchen, with your friends and neighbors.

a good test to see which is which? ask yourself if your daily habits and relationships are aligned with how you define "justice" -- beyond belief and opinion, if there's no "justice" practicable in your home and among your neighbors, how could you possibly practice "justice" elsewhere?

i don't care if you're doing the right thing; are you doing a good thing?

the more i study/practice anarchisms and feminisms, the more obvious this seems:

you cannot sufficiently be an anarchist without also being a feminist, and you cannot sufficiently be a feminist without also being an anarchist

an anarchism without feminism leads folk to reproduce gender in ways which maintain patriarchal dominance, which isn't very "no masters"

a feminism without anarchism leads folk to maintain capitalist, state, colonial dominance, which isn't very "we should all be equal"

i want to meet with my local library's staff to encourage their hosting a Mastodon instance.

what resources should i share with them? am looking for persuasive articles, technical setup guides, etc.
