Accessible faux-nested interactive controls

A really common user interface pattern is a big clickable area, such as a card. Sometimes you need controls within that card that are also clickable. There's lots of ways to do it wrong, but fret not, Eric is here to show you how to do it right.

This is something I consider important.

Two standard URIs we need in [current year]:

1. Music. I should be able to share a platform agnostic link to a song that your music service can match and open correctly

2. Maps. This one should be like especially straightforward. Why can’t I send you a link from Apple Maps that opens in Google Maps or Open Street Map or whatever.

Let’s go standards body people. I know y’all are on Fedi

Edit: hey maybe check replies before replying. A ton of people have already mentioned geo:// 🙂

I personally never want to receive a magic link when there’s another way to sign in, but they do have their place. Back in January, I wrote about how passkeys and magic links can be combined to deliver a smooth and robust authentication experience. https://rmondello.com/2025/01/02/magic-links-and-passkeys/

Magic Links Have Rough Edges, but Passkeys Can Smooth Them Over

Magic links, those emailed one-time login links, are annoying and inconvenient for folks who use a password manager, but they radically accept some fundamental truths about signing in for everyone else. By layering passkeys on top of magic links, websites can provide a seamless authentication experience for all users.

PNG is back!

After 20 years, PNG is back with renewed vigor! A new PNG spec was just released.

Me after punching someone in the face: “OK, fight’s over.”
It finally happened. :) Someone sent me a link to a spec that I am an editor of (and created). https://social.mkj.earth/@mkj/114542216029847256

@[email protected] https://www.w3.org/TR/change-password-url/ (which defines /.well-known/change-password) is the closest I can imagine, but last I looked that was just a redirection point to whatever "change password" functionality is provided by the web site UI.
