Trying again to restart my momentum with posting. I love how this shot came out.

I've been playing with a new setup, and editor to really capture things
See, this is is why I love working from home.

I'm in shorts and a sleeveless shirt, and spent my lunch break listen to music very loudly while whipping up carbonara (from leftovers, but still added more bacon and another egg) and an espresso.
I've been off my posting game, so I'm going to go for some shorter stuff to build the habit back up.

this card really gives me "Montero" vibes.
(This was from yesterday, but I didn't get to finish writing it)

While the listed topic of today's meditation was "calm", it really focused on acceptance. Letting go of "should", and sitting with what is. A thing I've wrestled with quite a bit over the last few years, and expect I will continue to, is the relationships between acceptance, resignation, and apathy.

Acceptance is simply about acknowledging what is. When you see a situation that is "bad", and have a reaction to it, those things simply are.

That doesn't mean you give up on making change (that's resignation), or are unmoved by the situation (apathy). Its more about allowing "a thing happened, and you had an emotional response to that" to happen without judgement. If you feel angry, feel angry. Do not add to your burden by worrying about if you _should_ feel one way or another.

You can then seek change from a position of "things *can* be better" not "things *should*" be better.

Even these words feel insufficient to describe the internal dialog, and where I've landed.

The Hierophant (V): Conventional, Institution, Tradition

First, I must confess I'm not overly familiar with the Hierophant, so today is a learning opportunity for me too!

The Hierophant is someone deeply rooted in tradition. A wise counselor, a teacher. At first, this feels in direct opposition to all the bits I wrote before about acceptance while still working towards change.

But deeper reading challenges that. Its a guide for growth. And growth doesn't come from blind adherence to tradition. But it also doesn't come from ignoring tradition. Traditions exist for a reason. If you want to change them, you need to understand what purpose they server first.

Today's meditation was on resilience and rest. The big thing was really challenging the modern conception of "resilient". Typically, we think of someone who can just keep going, despite all their limits, despite what damage it does. But, is that really resilient? Maybe in the short term, and only if we're looking at what that person can *accomplish*

But that's not really building the deeper personal resilience that comes from learning and respecting your limits, taking time to *truly* rest and recharge, and put in the effort to build that well of internal reserves to draw on.

Nine of Lotuses: Sacrifice

The reading in the book on this card digs into the nature of sacrifice, and how that around the era of the Buddha, several different cultures were moving away from animal sacrifice to a more intellectual/personal/spiritual sacrifice. Instead of sacrificing physical things (possessions/livestock/money), sacrificing behaviors. Adhering to a moral code (any of them), requires a sacrifice of your desires.

Tying this into the meditation and applying it all personally, I find myself thinking on the question "what are we sacrificing, and for whom?".

I'm starting off today really struggling to find center. I don't know if I didn't ease into the day enough or what. All I know is that I'm feeling unbalanced and unfocused today.

Even my daily meditation, today on self kindness, was had to _get into_.

Hopefully a few moments pulling and reflecting on a card will help some. And, if not, then I'll have an excellent opportunity to practice some of that self kindness today.

Two of Earth: Adaptability, prioritization, being on-the-go

Well, that's pretty direct now, isn't it? Adapt and prioritize. One of those I tend to be good at, the other less so. Today, I'm seeing "adapt to what you've got" and "prioritize things, so that you don't run out of steam with your limited resources". That last line about being on-the-go could also be an indication that I've been doing _a lot_ recently, and maybe I need to find the time to slow down and recharge.

My wife and I took some time last weekend to try to do that, but plans kept changing so quickly that we didn't get the rest/recharge time we'd anticipated. Maybe expecting more rest than I got is part of the struggle? Only time will tell

Its another Monday, so I am going back to the well of my "Mystic Mondays" deck. This deck always feels hopeful. With the simplistic art and high saturation, a sense of calm optimism seems to radiate, no matter the card.

Todays meditation was on awareness. Taking the time and making the effort to be fully aware and present. Sitting with the sensations in your body, your emotions, and your senses. It can be a lot to take in, and often lets us get to all those things our mind has tagged as constant, and has filtered out. Maybe its a sense of unease, a small discomfort in our shoulder, or the ticking of a clock that's always there, but you never hear.

Knight of Pentacles: Harvest, Dedication, Routine

This card is a reminder that the best results come from slow, persistent effort. All of life is a marathon, not a sprint. Be ambitious in your goals, but pace yourself. You can't do god for yourself, or others, if you burn out on the first lap. Work hard, but at a sustainable pace. Be relentless in pursuit of our goals, but also take the time needed to rest.

Often, the biggest challenge in being slow but persistent is that the goal doesn't seem like its getting any closer, so its easy to loose steam. But, when we combine that with awareness, we can be more attuned to the small changes, and our progress becomes more apparent.

Today's meditation was on finding and building resilience by looking at the things in life that drain our energy and finding ways to remedy that. Be that letting go of stress, dealing with issues, or simply resting. As I sat with the idea of resilience and looked at my decks, the "Supernatural" deck all but jumped off the shelf. While the boys certainly weren't anyone's definition of healthy (physically, mentally, emotionally), they were resilient anyway.

They did, after all, carry on.

Death (XIII): Significant change

OK, so, anyone tuning in recently might not know this, but I have a (maybe strange?) affinity for the Death card. So much so that I have an entire upper arm tattoo dedicated to it. No, this isn't because I'm trying to be edgey or morbid. Death is change. The natural order of one thing flowing into the next. Spring cannot come without fall and winter. Dawn cannot come without night. Life cannot exist without Death to renew it. Its the ultimate reminder not just of our own mortality, but of the impermanence of all things.

Its amusingly fitting that I pulled this on the last day of the month. The next thing cannot start until this thing ends.

The only constant is change. Don't fear (the reaper) it. Its not good or bad. It just *is*

Over the weekend I bought a new deck to add to my collection, so I'll be breaking from my "Mystic Mondays" tradition this time in favor of that. I've got a wide variety of decks, but until recently I'd lacked a truly traditional one. What I got was an "Original/Official " Rider-Waite deck, with very classic artwork. Its not thematic, its not flashy, but its classical. I look forward to seeing what perspectives it offers.

Three of Pentacles: Skilled Labor, renown, glory

I can't tell you what specifically I find compelling about this deck, other than that its a classic. I'll have to work with it a lot more before I really get a vibe from it. That being said, I do think there's a lot of value in tracing a thing back to its roots. Understanding where something came from, and why, is central to understanding how it is now.

Today, I'm focusing on ... focus. As an #ADHDer, regulation of that focus is something I really struggle with. My ongoing efforts are three fold. Learning what things challenge my focus, learning how to mitigate that, and learning to be kind to myself when I don't do as well as I'd like.

So, I'll challenge you to part of that as well. Identify something you're struggling with. Try to do better. Be kind to yourself when you don't.

I've had the interesting experience recently where my challenges with mornings (I am very not a morning person) have been much shorter lived. Is not that I like mornings, but I seem to be able to get up over that more quickly, get focused on what needs done, and do it. This lead me to doing a bunch of things in a different order today, curious what the outcome would be like. Typically, I make some food and coffee, read work emails and plan my day, put my child on the bus, and then come back home and do a quick meditation session before digging into the meat of my day. Today, I tried meditating before going to the bus stop. This also happens to be before my #adhd meds kick in. And boy howdy was it a very different experience.

If anything, this has absolutely renewed my sense of gratitude at having taken the steps to get a diagnosis and medication. I finally know what quiet sounds like.

Five of Blades: Conflict, disagreement, winning above all

Both the suite of Blades and the 5's in tarot can be about conflict. Blades are about movement, agility, and possibly violence. Fives are about moving out of equilibrium, the beginnings of conflict. Combined this seems to indicate either the end of something balanced, or the beginning of a conflict.

I don't immediately see any connections here to my own life, but that's how these things work sometimes. The only connection I'm quickly drawing is to a reminder that winning "at all costs" might not actually be winning at all. Its better to be defeated and remain true to yourself than to give up yourself in order to win. That alone runs contrary to a lot of pop culture and world view at the moment, where success is everything.

So, maybe define your own metrics for success.
