Fediverse is not Decentralized, and we need decentralized for true online freedom and privacy.
I appreciate the functionality of the fediverse social network and believe that its structure has made a significant contribution to online freedom. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the fediverse has not fully addressed privacy concerns, and we still haven’t achieved complete freedom in terms of ownership of our accounts and content. Several issues persist: - Banning still occurs. - Content may disappear upon logging back in. - Email verification is required during registration, compromising anonymity. Each relay in the fediverse has an owner and a moderator with the power to control it, a situation that wouldn’t occur in a truly decentralized network where everyone is equal. Currently, WireMin seems to be the only platform in the market that I discovered has successfully balanced both online freedom and privacy. It offers: - Anonymous identity: No email address or phone number is required for account creation, allowing users to be anyone or no one on WireMin. - Assurances against banning, as stated in WireMin’s official FAQ. - The ability for users to remove feed posts or group messages, giving them control over their content. While WireMin may not have a large user base yet evidenced by the limited interesting chat and feed spaces, I believe this application has great potential, because it addresses the issues of online freedom and privacy that the fediverse lacked.
'Signal tests usernames to avoid using phone numbers.' Great move?
It seems useless to me, at least regarding the cybersecurity aspect. Of course, it’s helpful when people ask for my contact information, and I don’t want to share my phone number or email address. But they still require information that could be used to prove or be linked to my identity for registration, right? This means a hacker could still reveal your IP address, phone number, email, and your passcode. Likewise, the development team can access these as well. I know I’m overly cautious about my privacy, but that’s just how I am.

The same threat actor has leaked larger amounts of data from LinkedIn dated 2023. They claim this new data contains 35M lines and is 12 GB uncompressed. [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ca654cd1-2082-42b7-af00-28a78ee53838.png]
Switch between an encrypted messenger and a decentralized social media platform.
WireMin has recently announced their new feature (for those who don’t know what is WireMin, it is a decentralized version of Twitter + Signal): "You can now customize your Social Preference! Wanna connect with the world➡️ Enable Spaces. Wanna stay low key➡️ Disable Spaces. Your Social Network, Your Way!“ As a 3-month user of WireMin, I am quite familiar with the ‘Spaces’ feature; it is definitely their standout feature. Here are a couple of things you can do in the WireMin Space: - Chat space: you can create your own public/private one or join other public chat rooms anonymously. - Feed space: you have your own feed where you can post text, pictures, or videos, set them to disappear after 48 hours, or even choose a longer duration. - Space Discovery: it’s like a ‘Spaces Plaza,’ where you can find all the public chat spaces or feed spaces as long as they have been active in the past 48 hours. - Plus, due to its nature as a decentralized network, there is no censorship here, and no one has the power to ban anyone, even though there is toxic content (they do have a NSFW content filter, but it can only filter those spaces that the creators have flagged as NSFW). So, I don’t know why someone would want to disable the Spaces! But looking at it from another perspective, not everyone enjoys posting on their feed or joining anonymous discussions. This makes Space Discovery useless for them, so an encrypted messenger for 1-on-1 chats might be more useful to them. I have used it under the ‘Disable Spaces’ mode; it offers a 10-member limit for secret groups. That’s too limiting for me, but it might be sufficient for colleagues to discuss confidential matters in a small group. Anyway, overall, I think it’s a pretty innovative concept for a social media platform, especially since it’s decentralized. I really believe they are making significant changes to the digital world. All I need now is the source code, please!
