I don't know how much of it is true, but in the world of DEEPLIGHT, many of the experienced divers have some degree of hearing loss and show it off with cool jewelry. Since this is an island setting where people are always diving, everyone has some degree of signing competence, including hearing folk.

So we see the main character meet some divers, ask if they prefer to sign or read lips, and then the entire conversation continues in sign language.

I've been in a reading slump, but horror always brings me out of it.

Currently reading:

- DON'T FEAR THE REAPER by Stephen Graham Jones, the sequel to MY HEART IS A CHAINSAW

- DEEPLIGHT by Frances Hardinge, some kind of standalone fantasy book about submarines and an expedition to recover some parts of dead gods in the deep sea. No idea what's happening but I like it very much and am very happy to see the use of sign language!!!!!

@moiety advanced reader (or reviewer) copy

they're copies of books that are distributed by publishers to reviewers and book professionals to start getting reviews and hopefully promotions before the book is released to the general public.

DONT FEAR THE REAPER taking 3 weeks to arrive is extremely rude to me specifically.
I have 9 ARCs on my reading list but I just want to read Stephen Graham Jones's entire backlist instead.

the TLDR again is that Hoover wrote this book to feel like a romance and make all of the main couple's moments romantic but the relationship is violently abusive, and it's popular among teens and young adults.

a coloring book so you can relive the highlights of a book that's intentionally rose-colored abuse, knowing it'll get snatched up by teens and young adults? problematic af

Here is my thread on Colleen Hoover and more context on why this is a bad idea: https://queer.garden/@winterdemon/109563475560104292

individual toots have CWs but overall, there's talk of how Hoover intentionally manipulates readers into romanticizing an abusive relationship, as well as references to intimate partner violence/domestic abuse, incest, and a gross way of talking about a child

for those who don't know, colleen hoover is a popular american contemporary author who writes "romance" novels, promoted incessantly on tiktok to the point where she's become a bestseller many times over. she doesn't believe in content warnings and has been criticized for how her books shirk genre conventions to intentionally blindside readers.

Queer Garden

Colleen Hoover's book about domestic violence written through a rose-colored lens is getting a coloring book.

"Now you can color illustrations of the most memorable scenes"

.......he beats her repeatedly. what is there to color but the fear in her eyes and the blood on her face, wtf??????

like yes, i can sit here and listen to this kid talk about dragons and supply her with chocolate. easy peasy.
children are very hilarious and wholesome when you're the fun aunt who just gets to hang out and be cool by default
