for those who don't know, colleen hoover is a popular american contemporary author who writes "romance" novels, promoted incessantly on tiktok to the point where she's become a bestseller many times over. she doesn't believe in content warnings and has been criticized for how her books shirk genre conventions to intentionally blindside readers.
the TLDR again is that Hoover wrote this book to feel like a romance and make all of the main couple's moments romantic but the relationship is violently abusive, and it's popular among teens and young adults.
