Physicist (CERN and others) turned data-science entrepreneur (Prevue.ch).
Aside: I once considered forming an ops consulting service called "Age Against The Machine". I kind of regret not doing that.

@jaztrophysicist @johncarlosbaez @krazykitty Yes, it does work, the small pay. It makes sense as a reward.

And those consulting jobs during university hours, don’t get me started. It’s a scam by those scientists, but it’s incentivised by capitalist politics that wants universities to be profitable companies…

@johncarlosbaez @jaztrophysicist @krazykitty Or are you telling me you do not do the reviews during office hours?
And sure, a commercial journal should pay for its peer review process, and that money should go to your employer who is paying for your time.
@johncarlosbaez @jaztrophysicist @krazykitty you already get paid to do this, by your university. It is part of your paid duties already. It’s weird to want to be paid twice for one job. That said, the whole process should indeed just be a lottery among all proposals that meet certain requirements, as François says.
@ionica Voor die astrofysicus zelf is 1 like natuurlijk genoeg, kan ik bevestigen. Maar goed, mensen van hun geloof afhelpen doe je natuurlijk niet door ze te beledigen.
Study: Meta’s Llama 3.1 can recall 42 percent of the first Harry Potter book
The research could have big implications for generative AI copyright lawsuits.

Just thinking about better ways to penalize corporations that break the law.

Fines are trivial and never keep pace with reality. Instead, what if companies had to give back a chunk of shares to the government? Issuing new shares that dilute existing shareholder value, and making the govt part owners. Effectively, nationalize the company in degrees with every breach of trust.
