Here's a contact I made with Chris VK2DO the other day. 220km is pretty good. You can see there were plenty of planes queued up to land at Sydney, Aircraft scatter contacts are very brief, but signals go from barely audible to right-next-door strong. In #hamradio, they say 'height is might,' and this is particularly so on VHF. I am in the #BlueMountains at 600m/2000ft above sea level. My tower is about 10m tall. The 9 element yagi beam produces 14dB of gain. When driven with a 150 watt amplifier, my effective radiated power is about 3000 watts. FUN things happen on summer nornings!
Summer mornings are lots of fun on the 2 metre #hamradio band. While VHF signals normally only travel to the horizon, about 80km, a certain atmospheric effect known as 'tropospheric ducting' can conduct them many hundreds, if not 1000s of km. The coloured blobs indicate a tropo ducting possibility. None over NSW this morning but lots of long distance contacts being made. What's happening? Aircraft scatter! Signals are bouncing off passing jets.
