‘Older programs were all about what you need: you can do this, that, whatever you want, just let me know.

But recently (a decade, more or less), this relationship has subtly changed. Newer programs (which are called apps now, yes, I know) started to want things from you.’

Needy programs

We used to use software; now software started to use us

@dmoren Hi, Dan. I was just listening to Clockwise - have you considered buying a used/refurbished iPhone SE? Amazon sells them under their "Renewed" brand with warranty. I got one a while back and it was just perfect.

YESTERDAY

Yesterday,
All those backups seemed a waste of pay.
Now my database has gone away.
Oh I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
There's not half the files there used to be,
And there's a milestone
hanging over me
The system crashed so suddenly.

I pushed something wrong
What it was I could not say.

Now all my data's gone
and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday,
The need for back-ups seemed so far away.
I knew my data was all here to stay,
Now I believe in yesterday.

A cat can be a beautiful addition to your garden, and with proper care and good nutrition it can thrive just as well in a pot as directly on a flowerbed.
A small selection of my photos from the 2024 Floriade in Canberra (a few weeks ago).
My beliefs are simple, and hardly radical: Libraries are critical infrastructure. Access to information is a human right. When you buy a book you should truly own it. When a library buys a book, they should be able to lend it. Readers should be able to read without any third parties spying over their shoulders, or preventing them from accessing the materials they have legally obtained.
Man, I miss the precedented times
I feel judged.
@jamesthomson James, I have a repeated issue with Pcalc where I click on the menu bar icon in one monitor and it the calculator pops up in a different monitor. Clicking the icon twice more (once to close, once to reopen) makes it show up in the right place. Have you seen that at some point?
