The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

“The upshot is, if you adopt LLMs into your work flow, you are intentionally adopting a bullshit engine. Nothing that comes from an LLM should ever be trusted. There is no accountability for the inevitable errors and fabrications that they bring to your work.

I know that, in doing this, I contribute to the problem in its own way, but I simply can’t bear it anymore. The AI frenzy I have seen among my fellow translators has to stop. It feels like I&…

@benfry so sorry and depressing to hear! Processing has literally changed my life for good, I owe to it a lot of what I do now for a living. I hope wherever the project goes it goes there with you and Casey and following your lead and vision, and I wish we’ll soon get more transparency wrt how the Foundation is deciding to allocate budget and why

I think the saddest thing about the current AI art ethic debate is how much people devalue *Art* and conflate it with simple image making.

The medium of a lot of art is image based but the image itself does not art make. Art is when there’s intent, the execution then in a visual language, machines do not have intent nor artistic decisions.

It’s like grammatically correct word salads. But then again AI does make those and many can’t tell the difference there either.

For people who think artists just copy mindlessly what they see or implicitly internalize external stimuli so it’s analogous to AI… well it’s a well known fact that most people can’t think outside of their own experiences so the lack of understanding and imagination is to be expected 😒

At the end of the day, it’s maddening how little we value artists, craftsmanship, and paying creativity fairly.

@AstraKernel it seems to me that this is not really true, is it? I just tried the example and Rust ‘panicked at index out of bounds’. My current understanding is that Rust will always panic at runtime if you attempt to write out of the bounds of your array, so it brings down the program but it does not allow the overflow to happen.

This week's animation is a bit different; I used footage of the sky during a storm to modulate the scribbles' concentration on one of the layers...fascinating isn't it?
