Good morning to readers; #Kyiv remains in #Ukrainian hands.

This New Year’s Eve, Ukrainians are reclaiming Malanka and Vasyl.

The tradition lives on through street performances, with a goat that dies with the old year and revives with the new, played in the #Kyiv metro by Laima. https://www.counteroffensive.news/p/ukrainian-goat-carol-nye-traditions

Ukrainian goat carol NYE traditions

On New Year’s Eve, Ukrainians celebrate the day of Malanka and Vasyl, staging plays. Forgotten for decades, the tradition returns with a goat leading the way!

The Counteroffensive with Tim Mak

For the past three years, Laima Daukshas has been a part of theatrical performances on the holidays of Malanka and Vasyl.

She plays the goat: the life of the party who wards off evil spirits and brings luck and prosperity to the audience.

I worked in an old age home on school holiday and many of the residents would tell me their age followed by "you know." I've never understood the "you know" bit but love it, so I use it whenever I give my age. "I'm 28, you know."

"I live under a GOP Supermajority. I have lived under their boot for two decades. They have economically damaged my state and it wasn’t by accident. They did it to sell off the state and workers and land to the wealthy. They created a desperate situation in Missouri and that desperation equates to bounty for the oligarchs." ~ Jess Piper

The View from Rural Missouri by Jess Piper

As I walked along, exhausted, I ran into my friend Fadi.

He saw me, and his eyes spoke volumes… without me saying a word, he understood I wasn't okay.

He took me aside and said, Come, let's have coffee and check on you. Because he knows that coffee isn't just a drink for me; it's comfort, a moment of peace. Truly, some people's presence is a blessing… May God preserve the kind-hearted people around us.

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.”

We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.
