I never understood why Chavez got so much recognition when Huerta obviously did all the work. But in light of her coming forward, it makes so much sense now. Women and NB femmes have been dealing with men like this in movements for decades. Across the last 28 years, I’ve encountered more of these than I can count. Be very suspicious of people who seek the spotlight and the credit. Even if it makes you uncomfortable to get recognition, don’t let someone like that take credit for your work. The movement is rarely their true motivation. Predators seek easy access to power that lacks accountability. Their show off, attention seeking behavior is the first red flag. Men who seek to be the media darling, pull showy risky stunts, control publishing or messaging, etc. should make you skeptical. It’s not automatically bad, plenty of people harmlessly nerd out on these things. But some people seek them for the wrong reasons. The second red flag is hypersexuality (especially if it includes politicizing polyamory, forming “harems”, sexual harassment, ignoring asexual people, etc). Do not keep predators’ secrets to protect a movement. If a group is letting abuse go on, then it should die and be replaced with something better. They will send their flying monkeys to shut you up and blacklist you, but the seeds of doubt you sew might just encourage another person to trust their intuition and protect themselves. Accountability and exposure are preventive. Someone who genuinely regrets what they did and doesn’t want to do it again will not mind it being known. Take care, folks. Wishing all these women healing and recognition.

Hundreds of people who were once detained at the troubled immigration jail in the Florida Everglades, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” have disappeared. Democracy Now! speaks with Shirsho Dasgupta, a Miami Herald reporter who found that, as of late August, about two-thirds of the 1,800 immigrants who were held there in July have gone missing from ICE’s online database, with their families and attorneys unable to locate them. Earlier this month, a federal appeals court ruled the jail could continue to operate despite reports of abuse. “What we’re seeing at Alligator Alcatraz is basically a new model of immigration detention, where a state-run facility is operating as an extrajudicial black site, completely outside of the previous models of immigration detention in this country. And it’s making what was already a terrible system somehow even worse,” says Thomas Kennedy, policy analyst at the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
