Sometimes, the amount of work you have to put in to make something that turns out to be crap is really depressing. A short video on "The Quantum Phone" which took way too long and looks dreadful. Nerds may like the content though.

A while ago I thought I'd teach myself how to get life out of a 6502, and learn KiCad at the same time. It worked fine on the breadboard, and when the beautiful little PCBs eventually arrived, I couldn't wait to solder it up. It didn't work. I was so downhearted about this I put it aside for months without even wanting to look at it.
Last weekend I picked it up and looked deeper into the schematic; a single track was going to the wrong pin. Patching it with a little wire fixed it. Never give up.

Getting over excited after my previous success with the 6502 (see posts passim) I decided to try my hand at PCB design. It was a steep learning curve, but eventually I ended up with some cute little boards and was very excited. Today I soldered it up, and...it doesn't work. But if science teaches us anything, it teaches us to accept our failures as well as our successes, with quiet, dignity, and grace:

10 unpopular assertions about programming

Programmers won't like this, so they probably shouldn't read it. Everyone else probably won't get it, so they shouldn't read it either.

10 Unpopular Assertions About Programming

Sprint Demos are boring and weird. The vast majority of development work involves working on utilitarian code like API implementations, UI fixes, and business logic. As satisfying as it may be to work on, it's never going to be a spectator sport. The...
