Hello hello, I'm Vanessa, and I'm a poet, critic, and PhD student at USC in CW and literature, studying mostly postcolonial and critical race theory, memory studies, and more recently, the intersections between fantasy and race. Looking to connect with writers of color.

I've written for The Cut, Harper's Bazaar, Oxford American and others, and have poems in Poetry, Poets.org, Paris Review, NYT, etc.

I'm also a single mom living in LA. It's expensive.

I understand this, but the whole point of Mastodon is that it's decentralized, meaning that a commons is not built-in as a FEATURE. "No main characters" and all that. So no matter how many of "my" people I follow, if a new writer posts their work, it's unlikely I'll ever see it.

Post-pandemic, so many of us have become more isolated, lonely, nearly friendless. Twitter was and is crucial for alleviating that loneliness, and I worry about what will happen to people, including myself, who are losing this as not only a place of connection, but a commons.
And before you say Mastodon is a commons, no it isn't. You cannot just search and find people on Mastodon if they are on other instances. People on other instances are invisible to you.
