Post-pandemic, so many of us have become more isolated, lonely, nearly friendless. Twitter was and is crucial for alleviating that loneliness, and I worry about what will happen to people, including myself, who are losing this as not only a place of connection, but a commons.
And before you say Mastodon is a commons, no it isn't. You cannot just search and find people on Mastodon if they are on other instances. People on other instances are invisible to you.
Also let me clarify: WE ARE STILL FULLY IN A PANDEMIC, I mean post-pandemic lockdown.
@vanessid Does the explore feature not work? I only used it once but i found a journalist on a different server. As for the other stuff I don't disagree that it's been that place to find connection it just doesn't seem healthy to be doing it in a place that's purpose built for advertising, propaganda, and manipulation. Idk if this is the better place it's just hard for me to step back and say social media hasn't made a lot of people lose their shit
@vanessid I think you can - I see plenty in my federated feed.
@vanessid i'm feeling some of this too, and i think it disproportionately affects BIPOC, queer, and marginalized folks who have built up Twitter communities deliberately
