Also grumpy about folks talking about who can access whose data on Mastodon without contextualizing things -- more misleading than helpful.
Operators of a system where data is not end-to-end encrypted are able to access said data. Applies to fediverse admins, FB employees, Melon Husks, etc.
If you want to argue that it is safer to trust one large corporation instead of multiple independent admins, that's fine. But lets help each other understand things, and then let us make up our own minds.

There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.

👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.
Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration
vulpMy biggest tip for new fedi users is that when people say there's no recommendation algorithm here, they mean it. You really have to work to find things you enjoy, your timeline's not gonna curate itself. Follow lots of people to grow your network and find new people through their boosted posts. Then feel free to unfollow or even block anything you don't vibe with. This is your online space and you can do whatever you want with it.

Apparently the 'note' field at the bottom of someone's profile is private to you, & you can add a wee note to remind yourself about them
Such as the reason you first followed is b/c they collect mushrooms or love black garlic or something else not listed in their bio or otherwise obvious 😊
Or perhaps you unfollowed them b/c you love their stuff, but they post too frequently & you need to remind yourself not to get sucked in again 😵
