🚨 Today I learned

Apparently the 'note' field at the bottom of someone's profile is private to you, & you can add a wee note to remind yourself about them

Such as the reason you first followed is b/c they collect mushrooms or love black garlic or something else not listed in their bio or otherwise obvious 😊

Or perhaps you unfollowed them b/c you love their stuff, but they post too frequently & you need to remind yourself not to get sucked in again 😡

Help your brain! πŸ’ͺ

#feditip #toptips

Quick followup:

The note field should be somewhere clearly defined in someone's profile box.

If it's not, it probably has something to do with the app you have - I can see when I log in FROM THE WEB on my laptop and my (i)phone - I don't use an app.

However, someone has confirmed it IS visible in the Tusky app, if that helps.

As I say, I just log in from the web everywhere, and I'm fine. ☺️

Hope this helps! I'm sorry I didn't know before. 😬

@Her_Doing I wanted this from the birdsite for the *longest* time. "Which random viral thread first drew my attention to this person? Why am I following them?"

@cythraul There are people I have followed for YEARS, that should never have crossed my path normally & we have no idea how we met or why or when.

I wish we did!

@Her_Doing I need #blackgarlic mastodon

@edk

It sounds *amazing* !! I thought it was a different species (not the right word, but you know what I mean) of garlic, but it's just regular garlic cooked for a long, long, LONG time (like WEEKS), until it carmelises and goes dark.

There is no way I'm set up to make that on my own, but I'm trying to track down a bottle of it to try! πŸ˜‹

@Her_Doing Mystery solved! That's very helpful. Thanks.

@billbarol

You're very welcome! I'm glad it helped!

It's *hard* being in a new place, even if you're normally fairly savvy; there are just so many little things that are different that you have to learn by trial and error - or a tip boosted. πŸ™‚

Welcome to the Fediverse! I hope you like it here!

@Her_Doing what note field? Where? Sounds good but I can’t see any note field on your profile… I’m new…

@thatedoloughlin

Hi Ed - welcome!

I'm not sure what to tell you; usually the note field is in the middle or bottom of a person's profile block. For example, I can see your name & instance address, then the note block, then when you joined, then how many posts/following/followers you have.

Some people have added fields (ex: pronouns, location, website, etc.), but even then, it's between those fields and their bio.

I can't see mine, but presumably because I wouldn't need notes for myself. 😁

@Her_Doing Thank you. I did not know this. How very useful.

@WendyMsGator

You're very welcome! There is a LOT to learn, some of it more important than the rest, and it is so easy to be overwhelmed and/or miss stuff.

This is something small, but so easy, and it really can help.

Welcome! I hope you like it here! πŸ‘‹

@Her_Doing Thanks!! I'd wondered if that was private or not!

@cafechatnoir

You're very welcome! I'm glad to help! πŸ‘

@Her_Doing is this a website only option? I can't seem to see the same thing in the Android app, but perhaps I'm still figuring out where things are here...

@The_lazyknight

Nope! You can definitely use it on mobile devices, but I'm afraid I don't know the technical details.

You might not be seeing it in Android because it's not called Mastodon?

I found this article & perhaps it will help! 🀞

https://www.androidauthority.com/best-mastodon-apps-android-1210889/

Also, as soon as I find it, I'll publicly post a link to Mastodon FAQs in case the answer is there - plus, I bet every admin on every instance is getting slammed right now & would be good to circulate anyway.

10 best mastodon apps that work with other federated social media

Mastodon is a unique social network without an official app. Get online with the best Mastodon apps that also work with other networks too!

Android Authority

@Her_Doing hrm. Left hand one is directly from the wandering.shop instance in chrime, right hand is in the mastodon app.

It seems that the mastodon app has other chunks of functionality missing. Heyho!

Thanks for the link!

@The_lazyknight

Wow, what a difference! I really can't explain it, I just don't know enough.

I DO know that every admin moderates a tiny bit differently, so different instances have different features turned on - sometimes even different emoticons!

It might be something like that; one app is pulling data from more behind-the-scenes parameters that the other app has turned off.

You are very welcome for the link - I hope it helps! πŸ‘

@Her_Doing @The_lazyknight The functionality is available in the Tusky app if you're looking for an alternative to the main Mastodon app. Thanks for this tip, Her_Doing!

@tommulherin @The_lazyknight

Thank you! I'm getting lots of questions about this!!

Both on my phone & laptop, I just log in from the web (no app), so I didn't know why some people had an issue.

@Her_Doing Oh snap! That might be the most helpful note (pun intended) that I've read today. Thank you!

@donmelton

You're so very welcome!! I'm so glad I could help!!

(Honestly, I am rather astounded how popular this is. I didn't think it would get any notice at all! 😲 )

@Her_Doing Thanks for sharing this discovery - it was on my list of things to figure out, track down, ask about. Will start using what sounds like a handy feature.

@bookgaga

You're very welcome! It's perhaps not the most important thing you need to know, but often, knowing the little things add such pleasure to an experience.

I'm glad I could help! πŸ™

@Her_Doing Indeed, it's often those little things that make the difference. Thanks again.
@Her_Doing Wow, that's so cool. I didn't even notice that space. I'm not saying that someone just earned a "has cool tips" note, but I'm not not-saying that, either!

@Her_Doing

Do notes follow you when you move instances via the move instance feature?

@ne1for23

Oooh, good question! I would HOPE so (and it would seem logical if your following/followers lists move with you), but I'm sorry - I don't really know. 😬

@Her_Doing for anyone else on the app wondering "what note field?": it seems to be missing from the official app, but it is on the (mobile) website.

@nikcorg

Ah! Thank you!

I'm working from laptop & I can see it, but there does seem to be some confusion sometimes.

@Her_Doing I don’t see a β€˜notes’ option. Is this only visible on desktop? I’m using the app.

@lunimess

It very well may be. I can see a note section for everyone but myself (because presumably I don't need notes about myself!), but I'm on a laptop.

I've had a couple of other people mention an issue & I think that's it.

(I'm sorry - I've had hundreds of messages & I don't remember them all.)

I'd be curious to know if you add a note to someone's profile from a desktop/laptop, can you see it from a mobile app? Something to test if (!!) I ever get time. πŸ˜„

@lunimess

Hi Lunimess, it should be somewhere clearly defined in someone's profile box.

If not, it probably is something to do with the app you have - I can see when I log in from the web on my laptop and my (i)phone - I don't use an app.

Someone just texted me and said it IS visible in the Tusky app, if that helps.

As I say, I just log in from the web everywhere, and I'm fine.

Hope this helps! I'm sorry I didn't know before. 😬

@Her_Doing thanks for the response! I’m going to check it out on desktop later today. I’ve read elsewhere that there are more features available in the online version vs app. I’m using the mastodon app and will check out tusky as well. The more I learn about mastodon, the more I like it and will likely be settling in over here. That other place has become a health hazard.

@lunimess

I'm trying to hang on there for as long as possible, but it's getting harder. πŸ˜”

I've had accounts here for years, so I have a pretty good idea of what both sites have to offer.

Good luck with your explorations! I'm pretty happy with just the basics, but if you have the time/energy/interest, I know there is a LOT to discover!

@Her_Doing I was an early Twitter user and was very engaged there until 2009-10. There was a specific event back then that jaded social media for me and I bailed. I think I’ve engaged more here in 24 hours than I have in the last 10+ years on any platform. This is reminding me of the good old days before Twitter became a toxic cesspool and escalated into the dangerous and deadly purveyor of disinfo that it is today.

Thanks again for your help! Enjoy your weekend.

@lunimess

I've had to mute the M word on Twitter & unfollow two people - so many trashing Mastodon who never heard of it before & don't know anything about it - especially the 'There's no one there, you can't find anything interesting, & no one sees your posts'

I've had more engagement with just ONE post here than ALL my posts on Twitter PUT TOGETHER.

Plus, it just feeds negativity & makes the place more toxic than ever. 😐

You're very welcome - enjoy yours too!

@Her_Doing I logged in on laptop and I can confirm that notes do not show up on the official mastodon app after adding a note to a profile on web version. Thanks so much for all your tips on this! The web version is a completely different world!

I didn't see the option to view "federated" feed on the app either, so a lot more is making sense now.

@lunimess

Well, stink. I was hoping it might. At least worst case scenario is you know how to enter notes at least one way & to find them again

About the federated feed - I'm glad you found it, but I'm sorry you were confused for a while

W so many joining at once, fr so many places, in so many ways, it's hard to give everyone attention & figure out how to help

I almost never go on the federated feed; it is just much too much for me & not pleasurable

Even the local feed rn is too much 😬

@Her_Doing That is an incredibly cool feature.

@kateschmidt

It really is! And it can be used for *anything*. "Remember to introduce to X", for example.

It's especially useful if you mostly follow one kind of person (all sf authors, all scientists, whatever) - they all blur together in my brain & I need help remembering what makes them different.

They are OBVIOUSLY cool - they're sf authors & scientists! πŸ˜ƒ - but what else?

How will *you* use it? What sparks ideas in *your* brain?

@Her_Doing I would love to do this … but neither mastodon -app nor Metatext-app provides such

Can you help me here ?
#newbees #neuhier

@2mamili

I think the issue might be you are trying on your phone instead of a laptop/desktop?

There does seem to be a hiccup in some instances, but I haven't had a chance to work out exactly where or why.

I'm sorry I can't be more help, but I hope that gives you a starting point. πŸ™

@2mamili

Ah - it seems to be an issue with the app. I log in on both my phone & laptop & it's fine - but apparently it doesn't work with all apps.

However, someone confirmed it DOES work with Tusky, if that helps.

Or - you can just log in from the internet (no app) & that should be fine too. πŸ˜ƒ

@Her_Doing the browser version is really really really great. But too big for my phone πŸ˜‚

@2mamili

Ah! I'm not sure I can help you there! 😬

Good luck!

@Her_Doing you already helped me. So thank you very much !
@Her_Doing i see it at the top. Look around everyone, its somewhere.

@Latchkeycodes

I'm just learning it may depend if you're using an app & which one.

I don't; I log in directly from the web.

Someone has said it DOES work with Tusky.

Hope this helps!

@Her_Doing that's a useful tip. Thanks

@Sarahw

You're very welcome - I'm glad it helps! πŸ‘

@Her_Doing I have always wanted that on the other side
@Her_Doing I did wonder if that's what it's for. Thanks for clarifying!

@theintentionalmum

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help! πŸ˜ƒ

@Her_Doing Thank you! I was wary of it...

@RadioSilence

You're welcome! I'm glad I could help!
