Elmo thought that he could make #Twitter more right-wing. But ultimately stakeholders do have to be comfortable with the moderation policies. If they are not they will leave.
The advertisers who pay for it all have made it clear that they are not comfortable with post-Elmo #Twitter. And there is huge distrust among lots of users. This has set #Twitter on a path of decline.
And that is a great opportunity for a decentralized network like #Mastodon.
And these monopolies (Facebook, Twitter, Google) become single points of attack for those who seek to leverage it for influence. The monopolies are already selling that influence through data collection and advertising. But algorithms and moderation policies are also a big part of it.
Facebook has long had a hidden right wing bent. But Zuckerberg was wise enough never to talk about politics.
@josh @ubiquity75 If #Mastodon is to grow to 100+ million users, it will need some commercial players.
Ultimately the best scenario for all of this is something close to how e-mail and the world-wide-web works. You pay for those services through your internet provider. But there are lots of alternative providers (web/e-mail hosting, GMail and the likes, VPNs).
It is in the places where everything is tied together (social networks, search engines) where we see the big monopolies.

My last pre-election thread! Feel good, am optimistic.
- Dems have built early vote "firewalls" across US
- Last wave of natl tracks very positive for Ds
- Red wave may be coming but not here yet
- Been an honor to fight alongside all of you! 1/
What I think will happen tomorrow in the #midterms.
This election there is a Dobbs effect. The polls have been underestimating D strength in special elections since the supreme court reversed Roe v. Wade. And Democrats have been doing very well in early voting.
So my guess would be something like a D+4 election with Democrats keeping the house and getting more senators.
