I needed to do a word count on a PDF the other day (my work is so exciting).
It opened in Adobe Acrobat, and its AI thing popped up, wanting to help.
I had planned to copy paste the text into a 'word count' website, but this AI was asking what I needed, so I asked.
646 Words, it told me.
Fam, there were 512 words in that document. It wasn't even *close*.
How did we break computers so badly that they can't even count anymore 😢

Today, there is an average of 37 tonnes of road per inhabitant of the planet. The weight of the road network alone accounts for a third of all construction worldwide, and has grown exponentially in the 20th century. There is 10 times more bitumen, in mass, than there are living animals...

How much does your road weigh?

The ways roads are used, with ever larger and heavier vehicles, have dramatic consequences on the environment – and electric cars are not the answer

The impressive Holzgerlingen stela is the largest known pre-Roman Iron Age stone statue in central Europe, standing 230 cm tall. This double-faced, anthropomorphic figure—dating to the 4th century BC—features a horn-like headdress interpreted a so-called leaf crown, and is likely a representation of a deity

I'm hearing more and more small farmers and gardeners raising concern about cardboard mulching and PFAS. Yikes.

"In addition to interfering with water and gas movement into the soil environment, corrugated cardboard has chemical contaminants that you really don’t want in your soil or even your compost pile. Corrugated cardboard contains environmental contaminants including dioxin and PFAs or ā€œforever chemicals.ā€ No gardener should want to introduce more of these widespread contaminants into their landscape or garden"

This was an unusual dish that I found. Sabahan Kerabu Agar. It's a spicy salad with the seaweed that is used to make Agar, the stuff that we put in petri dishes. The agar has a nice texture and it soaks up the spicy sauce well.

Wow, an alleged human actually did this:

Someone posts a series of sensible questions to frame a discussion on a working-group mailing list and, in reply, someone pasts them into Gemini and just attaches the output, a huge PDF that is full of completely irrelevant slop. It adds zero value to the discussion. It isn’t even a useful framing for more sensible thinking. It’s just a massive wall of text.

I’m starting to think that the concerns about LLMs hurting critical thinking ability might have been seriously underrated.

Your Cherokee words for today.
The top word is English followed by how it is written in the Cherokee language followed by how it is spelled in English then how to pronounce it phonetically.

There is a spirit that goes about at night with a light. The Cherokee call it "The Fire-Carrier" and are all afraid of it, because they do not know much about it and until that changes, is labeled dangerous. No exact description of what it looks like, because none stop long enough to gain a close encounter

I’m not sure what tomorrow brings. Most of the families got ā€œevacuationā€ orders today and have nowhere to go. They’ve been getting these orders for weeks.

It’s our duty to hope and stay resolute… give to survival funds. This is just one. Give to any.

We are a team of volunteers in the US and UK, led by two sisters passionate about helping our friends on the ground keep their families and neighbors alive with food, water, & shelter. We saw that their campaigns are extremely stagnant and wanted to find a way to direct steady help to them. We distribute your contributions equally every week for sustainable support.
