A mid-decade remap is an awful idea. Almost as awful as the insanity Republicans started in Texas https://virginiamercury.com/2026/03/03/a-mid-decade-remap-is-an-awful-idea-almost-as-awful-as-the-insanity-republicans-started-in-texas/
A mid-decade remap is an awful idea. Almost as awful as the insanity Republicans started in Texas • Virginia Mercury

Redistricting efforts in Virginia and elsewhere in response to Trump-fueled gerrymandering in other states has produced a malicious strain of politics in a state once known for respectful public discourse — or at least the veneer of it, columnist Bob Lewis writes.

I'm working on a show (after a 10-year hiatus from on-stage appearances)! I have an expository bit and ensemble work in The Arlington Players' _Peter and the Starcatcher_. It's a silly, sweet, imaginative prequel to the Peter Pan stories. We run 31 January through 15 February. Perfs are at Thomas Jefferson Middle School off Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia.

Listening to the Beatles' "It Won't Be Long" in the pre-show music mix at Studio Theatre, it occurred to me that the "Yeah-Yeah"s in the chorus are a simple example of hocketing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hocket). #discountMusicTheory

I am training my LLM on the works of Kurt Cobain, Tristan Tzara, Gertrude Stein, and James Joyce, particularly *Finnegans Wake*.

Closing out reports for the #WoodDuck and #HoodedMerganser nesting season at Huntley Meadows Park:

#WODUs started 1 more clutch than 2024 (11 vs. 10), but lost 5 of them (3 to predation, 2 to abandonment). 111 eggs laid, 61 hatched, 55% est. fledging success.

#HOMEs started 2 more clutches than last year (4 vs. 2); 1 was lost to abandonment. 51 eggs laid, 33 hatched, 65% est. fledging success.

It’s typical that the HOMEs start fewer clutches but achieve about 10 pts. better fledging success.

Ancient #BoneEatingWorms ate mosasaur, ichthyosaur and plesiosaur skeletons https://phys.org/news/2025-07-ancient-bone-worms-ate-mosasaur.html paper by Sarah Jamison-Todd et al.: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0326451

"These bone-eating communities are ancient, and have been on Earth for at least 100 million years. Before #whales existed, bone-eating #worms were eating into the skeletons of #mosasaurs, #ichthyosaurs and #plesiosaurs... New research has named seven of these burrow types... some are very similar to the burrows of living #Osedax worms."
