@dreid if you could give us a steer on what ‘kid friendly’ means to you I can be a bit more specific but my current go-to is a 2020 lenovo X13 for ~300AUD with linux on it.

@Brendan he might have a two way machine and just travels back and forth… Fillmore had quite a long career but my guess is people at the time “just couldn’t find him sometimes!”

@alexkidman I’ve been running a bit of a similar experiment (same experience 25 years ago with Red Hat).

Bought a $300 lenovo X13 from 2020 on eBay, threw Debian 13 on it and everything worked out of the box with no surprises. It’s the most pleasing to use PC in the house now.

(Threw debian 13 on my AMD B550 desktop from ~2023 and sleep completely locks the whole thing in a weird way that not even holding the button down will recover… have to yank the power so hey we’re still kinda there)

I output all 131,957 frames of Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket using ffmpeg in to 369GB of PNGs, then set the folder as a slideshow randomly selecting a new one every hour as my desktop background.

I'm obsessed with the result. Every frame a painting.

@drunkenmadman I don’t want to share my blocklist because there are things on there I care about but have had to hide because the barrage was getting too much - and people will understandably be hurt by them being blocked.

All this to say yeah, same. All the Trump/Elon/US stuff I’ve tried my best to eliminate. It’s just not healthy for me to see it all day long from the other side of the world.
