Here lies Capt. Frank Burns (1840-1909). He arrived in this Alabama community after fighting for the South in the Civil War. He worked as a geologist and would eventually move to Washington DC to work at the Smithsonian.

He provided some books and artifacts to the local school before it burned down in the 1890s. He returned to rouse the locals to fund a new building and became the school’s major donor. The children called him Grandpa Burns. (1/4)

For 12 years I thought he was Lemuel Welch. After yesterday's grueling research marathon, I now know he was Levi Shaffer Welch. He debated Christianity throughout Oklahoma in the nineteen-aughts. He left the debate circuit when he moved to Arkansas in 1908. He was 37 when he wrote his letter for the "Why I am an Atheist" campaign of 1903.

He wrote for the Spring Valley newspaper as "Celsus." He fathered six children. He died in 1941; as an atheist, I assume.
