Die 1960 in Hamburg als Sylvia Andler geborene Schriftstellerin May Ayim war eine der prägendsten Aktivistinnen der afrodeutschen Bewegung der 1980er und 1990er Jahre. Das von ihr mitherausgegebene Werk „Farbe bekennen“ gilt noch heute als Grundstein der kritischen Weißseinsforschung in Deutschland. Am 9. August 1996 starb sie durch Suizid.
