ACM Digital Library's AI summary is a stupid feature because authors probably spend the most time per-word on perfecting the Abstract. This is made even more stupid by the fact that you need to pay money to see it.

What would be a more worthwhile "premium" feature is to use LLM to generate a graph of publications using both explicit references and LLM-assisted feature extraction to greatly improve literature review and related work research.

I like how lowkey-inclusive the illustration on the 737 safety sheet is—woman holding a baby, dude with a prosthetic leg, and crocs.
In some sense the Alysa Liu story is like Monsters Inc. It turns out joy is more energizing than fear.
After watching some small amount of hockey this OG I couldn’t help but noticing how the men often had missing teeth while all the women mostly retain their perfectly pearly whites. Also women’s hockey was every bit as entertaining as men’s, if not more? To my amateur eyes the women seemed to do more intricate offenses. So in short, I don’t know what the men are risking their faces for.

If you thought you saw snow or hail in the Bay Area last night, you probably saw graupel.

Graupel is a weather phenomenon where snowflakes become coated in supercooled water droplets, giving them a soft, tiny Styrofoam-ball texture. It sounds like hail, looks like snow, and is terrible for making snowmen.

Thundergraupel - Doc Pop's Weblog

The weather has been wild in SF. On New Year’s Eve, we had the second-wettest day in San Francisco’s history. Since then, we’ve seen much more hail and lightning than we usually get, but on February 23rd, 2023, we had a graupel storm. Graupel is distinct from snow or hail and tends to occur alongside […]

You know who did a lot of programming on the Naval Ordnance Research Computer and was brilliant and good at orbits? Gladys West!

This archived Air Force bio says she was involved in the Pluto study https://web.archive.org/web/20190603171222/https://www.afspc.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1707464/mathematician-inducted-into-space-and-missiles-pioneers-hall-of-fame/

But the paper is credited as Cohen & Hubbard 1964. Because she was "just" a programmer, and the research note linked above starts and ends with "gentlemen", so yeah, they definitely didn't want to put her as a co-author.

Upgraded to iOS 26 due to the memory vulnerability, and let me tell you, it looks like shit. Completely anemic style and the logos look like they were designed by someone while they were on psychedelics.

One observation about the audience for FiveFingers-style shoes in China is that they seem to be primarily marketed to women.

My theory is that 1) Chinese women (also) love yoga; 2) Chinese people generally don’t want to be barefoot indoors. A combination of the two means Chinese women found Vibram FiveFinger soles to be the closest thing to a barefoot experience while still allowing them to keep their feet clean.

Posted by Ethereal Earth : “ Tonight's Wolf #Supermoon rising over New York but with a rare halo, perfectly aligned above the Statue of Liberty, casting an otherworldly glow across the skyline as the city lights shimmer on the calm harbor below.
This is a 22° lunar halo. As the light enters and exits the crystals, it is bent by a precise angle of about 22 degrees, separating slightly into colors with a faint reddish inner edge and cooler tones fading outward.“
We thought https://lmgtfy.app was a sarcastic joke, little did we realize it was a trillion dollar product idea.
