MSc Digital Sociology Postgrad
My research focus is in studying social media to investigate the spread of hate groups and prevent mass anti-minority violence in the U.S.

I'm also a D&D nerd and an animal lover!
I post news and awareness raising content, resources for researchers, and occasional palette cleansers

Some alt-right embarrassment news:

Ben Shapiro, transphobic podcaster and long-time advocate of LGBTQ+ genocide, recently said that "nuclear conflict would certainly not be off the table" in justified actions by Israel's against Palestine. Even his own fans are not happy at his blatant encouragement of genocide; 9.2K like 14K dislike ratio and comments show examples.

📚 If I've ever experienced the feeling of opening a potential research citation and going "Oh, you have everything I need!"

It's when I read part 3 of #WhitneyPhillips ' "Oxygen of Amplication: Better Practices for Reporting on Extremists, Antagonists, and Manipulators"

Just look at this beautiful table of contents!
Read it here: https://datasociety.net/library/oxygen-of-amplification/

Thanks to @vortex_egg for recommending!

The Oxygen of Amplification

New Data & Society report recommends editorial “better practices” for reporting on online bigots and manipulators; interviews journalists on accidental amplification of extreme agendas

Data & Society

Researching people who hate people like me, or people who act in opposition to my ability to live a peaceful life (like sexists, racists, homophobes and so on), sometimes feels like I'm one of the Tornado Hunters.

Yes, I'm getting a really good shot of this natural disaster on my camera, but how much closer can I drive my obnoxiously bright orange Ford F150 to the scene without getting swallowed up and meeting my demise?

More on deep cut #memes that you will not understand unless you are from the #Internet #2:

Helicopter Helicopter 🚁

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/helicopter-helicopter--2

Helicopter Helicopter

Helicopter Helicopter, also known as Fazlija's "Helikopter," refers to a song in which a male voice repeats, "helicopter, helicopter," while a helicopter's whirring sound emanates. The original Helicopter Helicopter song is called "Helikopter" by Romani-Bosnian singer Fazlija. In late October 2021, the song gained popularity as a TikTok sound. Many filmed videos of themselves spinning like helicopters or showed objects spinning like helicopters. The viral videos trended en masse going into 2022, gaining increased eminence over the years.

Know Your Meme

I've been thinking about a new daily post idea I might want to try because it brings me joy:

"Deep cut #Internet #memes that are decipherable only to the chronically online"

‼️ TRIGGER WARNING, TRANSPHOBIA

My colleagues who rejoice about how Mastodon is a peaceful utopia away from Twitter do so from a place of extreme privilege.

Beware of accounts going around posting graphic transphobic content like this one as we celebrate trans day of visibility.
