Extract caching logic into a separate `gradle-actions-caching` component by bigdaz · Pull Request #885 · gradle/actions

With this change, the caching functionality of setup-gradle and dependency-submission is now provided by gradle-actions-caching, a closed-source library distributed under our Terms of Use. The rest...

Heads up - don't just do the major version bump to 6.0.0 for the 'setup-gradle' GitHub action, without being clear about the implications for your setup.

@jendrik It really doesn't help that caching is enabled by default...
@jendrik Power users will know how to get around this, and it'll probably just be a minor nuisance when getting a new device.

@jendrik Don't get me wrong, I don't like the "intermediate" option of registering with Google for a signing cert using gov IDs either. In fact, I would not be surprised if they only offer the unrestricted third option due to regulations.

However, side-loading is only relevant to a fraction of users and offers no safety rails whatsoever - stores typically warn you when something you installed is vulnerable. It does make sense to make it more obscure to enable, in my opinion.

@jendrik This is actually significantly better than what it sounded like when this was originally announced. I don't like Google locking Android down, but this feels like a decent compromise between security and customizability.

Here's a bit more detail:

The "advanced flow" will be available before verification enforcement begins later this year.

re @claudeai

I've identified industrial-scale copyright violations on my content by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, X, and more.

These companies created thousands of crawlers incorporating the text of all my blog posts, open source code, and books into their paid AI models to profit exorbitantly.

Who needs Renovate or Dependabot when there is a much more convoluted, less accurate, nondeterministic, expensive, and more energy-intensive way to achieve the same thing!
