♻️ Recycled thread, June 22 2022

I had an inkling it might be possible to patch AppKit in Mac OS X 10.0 to re-enable the NEXTSTEP interface style after it was removed during the Developer Previews — and I was right! So here’s the shipping, consumer Mac OS X without Aqua turned on. It’s rather broken and crashy

There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today:

What to know about Threads

Mastodon Blog

I think defederating Threads is a huge missed opportunity for Mastodon to grow.

Imagine interacting with their users and letting them know that: you scroll posts without ads, your timeline is in chronological order, your client doesn’t spy on you, you only see what you want and no other content is pushed to your timeline, etc…

if I was a Threads users, I would move to Mastodon as soon as I find out 🙂

I want to expand more on the comedy of errors that led to the eviction of #Twitter from their Boulder, Colorado office.

The story that leads up to this building even existing is bizarre and hilarious, so here goes...

Twitter evicted from office amid lawsuits over unpaid rent and cleaning bills

@gbhnews We at WMBR feel the same!

We appreciate your boosts 🙏 It would be fun to go to our year-end meeting and say we have more followers in the #fediverse than we do on Instagram 😁

Really interesting thread on the differences between ActivityPub (used by Mastodon) and ATProto (used by Bluesky): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35881170
The AT protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit | Hacker News

Mastodon, like email and encrypted two-way radio, is based (approximately) on a "throw the message out there and hope for the best" delivery model. But the reliable protocols we use for secure and one-on-one communication are based on multi-round-trip handshakes and negotiation before and during message exchanges. Shoehorning DMs into the same mechanism to broadcast out toots is an inherent impedance mismatch.
