Louis XIV& Jacques began the day with mass at the Royal Chapel.
To accommodate the musicien du roi, two galleries were built in Salon de Mars, where most concerts, balls and dinners were held. Jacques had "board and lodging in Versailles".He worked there from ca 1688 until his death in 1726

I never expected that genealogical research would give me a picture of the whereabouts of a 17th century ancestor. Jacques Bastaron was a baritone and musicien du roi. He was said to be "excellait dans le pathétique, on dit que sa voix était superbe et d'un volume extraordinaire".

Contemporaries of my 6x-great-grandfather, wrote out the music played during the performances.

It was known that musical genes were present in our family thanks to the Magito ancestors. Through the female line, musical genes seem to have been added. Jacques Bastaron sang as a baritone at the morning mass of Louis XIV and is one of the few to be mentioned as a protagonist in court operas. I have other talents.

When I got round to looking at this record yesterday I realised it was indeed them. They were staying in the cheaper annex of a large expensive hotel. The other rooms were occupied by hotel staff and some visiting Music Hall Artistes.
The 1921 census was taken on the night of the 19-20th of June. Walter and Lilian were married on the 18th. They were on honeymoon!
That's just the sort of thing that keeps me researching.

My ancestor Pieter Magito(1708-1792), advertised in newspapers for decades his obtained permissions to perform. He also sold prints of his etched portrait and tiles were produced. Recently, I found an antique dealer offering rubber casts of his feet for €890
