Live Nation has an illegal monopoly, according to legal case in New York. A jury found that their business practice within the business area for selling concert tickets is a monopoly. Ticketmaster is the name of this business area within the Live Nation corporation. This verdict from the jury could have far reaching consequences also in Europe and elsewhere. Those affected could be fans, concert venues, touring companies, concert promoters, music artists, and other ticket sales service companies. The jury concluded that the company is monopolizing ticket sales to music concerts. Ticketmaster was found to overcharge customers for tickets in the USA. Live Nation had used its market power and abused its position and had been able to absorb more money from that would otherwise been going to either concert venues or music fans. This court case is not complete as of this writing. Possible verdicts include break-up of Live Nation and selling off Ticketmaster. Live Nation might also appeal, once the verdict is made.

Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith celebrates 250 years since its publication on March 9, 1776. This seminal book is considered the start of modern economics. He was a moral philosopher and his book; he gave moral legitimacy to earning an honest income by getting profits from professional activities and trade. Through this, the whole society would benefit collectively. Prices and profits would serve as an “invisible hand” and a guide for society. Adam Smith was not only interested in economics. He was also interested in the arts. In the lesser known ”Of the Affinity between Music, Dancing, and Poetry”, Adam Smith analyzed how the art forms are connected. His conclusion was that rhythm was foundational: · Rhythm organizes sound in music · Rhythm organizes bodily movement in dance · Rhythm organizes meter in poetry Smith thought it was likely that these art forms historically were performed together. Still, music and poetry could exist independently, but dance usually needed music because of the requirements of rhythm. Music and poetry could be combined into vocal music (songs). The idea of division of labor found in economics was something Smith wrote about in The Wealth of Nations. Perhaps, the picture that Smith painted of how the music, dance, and poetry had been divided into specialized professions within the arts is an expression of this, too. As the invisible hand guided towards an increased collective wealth in society, Smith thought that this was the key to an increase in the demand for painting, music, architecture, literature, and theater. In other words, business and art have a symbiotic relationship. Supervizion is a business consulting group that works with economics (business), the arts, and science. For the past months there have instead been talks of a Wall of Worry… Some points in this Wall of Worry we are hearing: · AI technology has created projections for future earnings for companies that are highly uncertain estimates. Productivity gains from AI will come but are yet to be realized on a broad front. There are extreme levels of capital expenditures among certain companies due to AI, will there be enough ROI? Some investments are made in a maze across companies that makes analysis harder. · A large portion of USA consumer spending has come from wealthier consumers while other consumers have held back spending. If the wealthy’s spending is removed there is not much cushion. · Job market with layoffs. Companies holding back hiring, especially younger people. Even college graduates have more difficulties in finding jobs. · Uncertainties on trade tariff policy decisions, their implementation, and maintenance. · Wars in Ukraine and Iran. Prices for oil and natural gas are elevated and uncertain. Could drive up inflation. · New Federal Reserve chair is inbound. Priorities underpinning rate policy decisions are uncertain. Some conditions for stagflation present, which would make it harder to benefit the economy uniformly from Fed policy decisions. · USA government’s debt-to-GDP ratio is about 120 % and Congressional Budget Office expects it to increase. When coupled with higher interest rates, it raises concern among observers. “Wall of Sound” is a music recording technique that layer multiple instruments playing the same parts with echo and reverb to produce a dense, powerful, and orchestral mass of sound. The originator of Wall of Sound, Phil Spector, got into a personal Wall of Worry later in life.

Record companies should add AI meta data when submitting to the Apple Music streaming platform. There are 4 new types of meta data to add: · If AI generated the composition to a “material portion”, then the AI composition tag should flag this. · For a single track, if a “material portion" was AI generated, then the AI track tag should flag this. · If the artwork that goes along with the track is AI generated this should be flagged with the AI artwork tag. This applies to both Static and Motion Graphic Artwork. · If the visual elements in a music video were AI generated to a “material portion”, then the AI music video tag should flag this. Disclosing the use of generative artificial intelligence for creating content that is submitted to Apple Music is currently optional but is believed to become required in the future. Music consumers have expressed that they would like to know if music they are listening to is AI generated. This addition could be a step in that direction. This development is in line with what we wrote in our article “AI for Music Creation, a Tool or Faking?”

Brand communication is often simplifying the characteristics of the brand to make it quickly and easily decoded. A real person, however, is multi-dimensional and more difficult to put in a bucket. Supervizion works with music artists and gives advice to them on business matters and the running of their companies. From our experience and conversations with artists, the discrepancies between the person and the artist brand can be challenging.
