Latest from STRA: We've announced our new 'FAST Plan' - our vision for the future of transport for students and young people.

STRA is calling on all levels of government, alongside other stakeholders such as schools, unis, and TAFEs to adopt a simple 50% modeshare goal by 2030.

That means that half of all Victorian commuters to schools, unis, & TAFEs get to their classes with public and active transport by the end of this decade.

An inaccessible network means that what is a temporary inconvenience for some travellers can stifle the wellbeing and livelihood of mobility-impaired passengers.

President Duale Siad (@wale) speaks on the importance of level access, highlighting the need for accessible tram stops along the Sydney Road section of route 19, before the Level Crossing Removal Project breaks ground on the Brunswick section of the Upfield line.

Fresh momentum to push for accessible trams in Sydney Road

With positive signs that construction of the Upfield skyrail will finally begin before the end of the decade, transport activists are renewing their push for accessible tram stops in Sydney Road.

For some, tram is the quickest way to the #Melbourne Royal Show - but the service is in dire need of improvement. #YarraTrams #accessibility

Victorian students currently have the least favourable tertiary student concession system, relative to other states.

We are the only state that has *two* different systems, for domestic and international tertiary students - the latter of which only allows for 90 / 180 / 365-day passes.

Streamlining the system, and including students in "general" concession fares will help decrease confusion, and allow more people to pay their way.

The best way to ensure revenue comes in to keep the network running, is to ensure that all passengers can easily pay, especially for concession card holders. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/sep/22/sydney-has-highest-transport-fare-evasion-rates-australia-what-can-it-learn-from-melbourne-brisbane
Sydney has the highest fare evasion rates in Australia. What can it learn from Melbourne and Brisbane?

Expert says the best way to support a growing public transport network and keep revenue coming in is to keep services reliable and ticket costs affordable

The Guardian

The reason for this is simple: fares are **far too expensive**.

Students may have to choose whether to eat, or to regularly pay their fares, especially with fares as high as $5.50 for a one-way trip.

Fewer than a third of bus travellers are touching on, and experts say it's a problem

Documents say less than a third of Melbourne bus commuters are touching on their Myki card to pay the fare, with the revenue loss potentially climbing into the millions.
